Optical Toys - White Shadows - Ombres Blanches. Collection of 14 portrait cutouts made of white handmade paper for enlarged projection using a light source. Germany, circa 1830. Approx. 16 x 10 cm. Most with hanging ribbons. A popular shadow play, also known as megalography or coptography. When illuminated from behind, the paper surfaces appear black on the projection screen, while the cutouts appear white. Four of the prints are inscribed in contemporary pen: Emperor Joseph II, Emperor Frederick IV (?) of Germany, Diogenes, and “Cossack”; the first three are signed “August Sattmann.” The remaining cutouts, with simpler lines, depict partly grotesque faces; “Emperor Frederick” is present a second time. — Some show traces of underdrawing, are somewhat stained, and have a few torn paper ridges.
