Horn had to defend himself against accusations by his colleague Kohlrausch, who blamed him for the death of a mentally ill patient. The accusations proved to be unfounded but led to his resignation in 1818 (Kirchhoff). The copperplate engravings vividly illustrate Horn’s treatment methods, such as dousing with cold water, steam baths, the rotating machine, the straitjacket, and military drills for the patients. - For the table on page 184, the bottom three lines have been supplemented with facsimiles on color-matched paper. - Some foxing. *
