His books appealed especially to the scholarly community. He wrote mostly in Italian, which facilitated translations ... Above all, he strove for a scholarly revival of the ancient classics. As a result of his work, all earlier works became superfluous to scholars and were set aside as obsolete. His best-known work is the magnificent edition published in 1568 by Valgrisius in Venice: “Commentarii in sex libros Pedacii Dioscoridis” ... His most beautiful work features full-page illustrations that were particularly well-received by the public.” (Heilmann). - Title page, 1 leaf of the dedicatory preface, and the poem dedicated to Bernhard Verzascha, with missing paper in the margins, have been supplemented; these pages and text sections are reproduced in facsimile on yellowish paper: title engraving, portrait of Bernhard Verzascha, 1 leaf from the dedicatory preface, pp. 1/2 (the first 6 and last 3 lines of each), pp. 3/4, p. /8 (the last 5 lines), pp. 9/10 (the first 6 and last 4 lines of each), and the last 6 sheets of the index. - Slightly browned and with foxing, with some water stains in places. *
