WilliamEvan Charles Morgan, British 1903-1979- An Italian hill farm; pencil and wash on paper, signed 'W.E.C. Morgan' (lower left), 15.2 x 20.6 cm. ARR. Provenance: with Alex Reid and Lefevre, Glasgow. with Martyn Gregory, London [VE 995]. Note: Morgan studied at Camberwell School of Art and the Slade School of Fine Art, winning the prestigious Prix de Rome Scholarship in 1924, which enabled him to continue his studies in Italy. The present study likely dates from his time in Italy. Morgan exhibited widely in London and Liverpool during the 1920s and 1930s, including at the Royal Academy, the Fine Art Society and the Walker Art Gallery. He also painted and taught art in Scotland and later at Harrow School of Art. His artistic output appears to have declined in later years, possibly due to deteriorating eyesight. His works are held in major collections including the British Museum, Ashmolean Museum, National Gallery of Art and Smithsonian American Art Museum.
