Ernest Ciceri, French 1817-1866- View of a French town with a fortified tower from a river; watercolour heightened with white on paper, signed 'Ernest Ciceri' (lower right), 9.5 x 13.3 cm. Provenance: with Martyn Gregory, London [MG]. Note: Ernest Ciceri was the son of Pierre Luc Charles Ciceri (1782-1868), a French painter and scenographer, and the brother of artist Eugène Cicéri (1813-1890). His maternal grandfather was Jean-Baptiste Isabey (1767-1855), the prominent French painter whose patrons were Josephine and Napoleon Bonaparte, and Louis XVIII. Ciceri worked mainly in watercolours and focused on landscapes and cityscapes.
