Thomas Fairbairn, RSW, Scottish 1820-1884/85- Old mansion, Stockwell Street, Glasgow, 1849; pencil and watercolour on paper, heightened with touches of white, signed and dated 'Thomas Fairbairn 1849' (lower centre), 22 x 28.3 cm. Provenance: With Martyn Gregory, London [VH919]. Note: A native of Glasgow, Thomas Fairbairn was trained under Andrew Donaldson and exhibited landscapes at the Suffolk Street Gallery from 1865 to 1877. In 1867 he was an unsuccessful candidate of the New Watercolour Society. Despite being primarily a landscape painter, he is most popularly known for his series of views of Glasgow's streets and buildings, reproduced in 'Relics of Ancient Architecture and Other Picturesque Scenes in Glasgow' published posthumously in 1885. This view of 29-37 Stockwell Street in Glasgow shows the original late 17th century house sandwiched between 19th century tenements. By the time of Fairbairn's drawing, the house was owned by a Mr Ritchie of Stockwell Street and the ground floors leased as Spirit Vaults.
