James Ward, RA, British 1769-1859- Two work horses and cart; pencil, pen, ink, and wash on paper, signed with initials and inscribed 'JWD. RA.' (lower left), 11.5 x 17.2 cm. Provenance: Ian Champness. with Martyn Gregory, London [VH347]. Note: James Ward was a British painter and engraver whose early work focused on horses and landscapes, and later shifted towards depictions of other farm animals, such as bulls, cows, dogs, or pigs. The present work is a fantastic example of this: two work horses tied to a cart, probably used for work in the countryside, drawn from behind with an accurate prospectic foreshortening. Ward's 'Study of the head of a dog looking away' recently reached £1,700 (Christie's, London, 1 July 2026, lot 183) and 'Mr Pether's Berkshire Pig' sold for £600 (Sworders, 28 May 2025, lot 289).
