Private Collection. Note: Princess Victoria was the eldest daughter of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert and was created Princess Royal in 1841. In 1858, aged seventeen, she married Prince Frederick William of Prussia. When her husband succeeded to the Prussian throne in 1888, she became Queen of Prussia and, following his death later that year, was widely known as Empress Frederick. An accomplished artist, Princess Victoria is represented in the Royal Collection by thirteen oil paintings, six of which are portraits. One of these depicts Maria, Countess von Bülow [RCIN 407526], a close friend of the Princess Royal, and bears striking similarities to the present work. Other examples of her works are catalogued by Oliver Millar in his 'Victorian Paintings in the Collection of HM The Queen', 1992, nos 1069-1078 and 1096. Roseberys sold another example, a portrait of her daughter, Princess Margaret of Prussia, on 22 November 2023, lot 233 (£4,198). Mademoiselle de Perpigna (1845-1914) was governess to the Prussian Royal Family.
