Jacques François Joseph Carabain, Dutch/Belgian 1834-1933- A street view in Frederickstadt; oil on panel, signed 'J. Carabain' (lower left), 36 x 30.5 cm. Provenance: with M. Newman, London. The Private Collection of the Berens Family. Note: Carabain studied in Amsterdam under Jacobus Schoemaker Doyer (1792-1867) and Valentijn Bing (1812-1895), and was heavily influenced by the cityscapes of Belgian artist François-Antoine Bossuet (1798-1889). He travelled widely across Europe, painting the figures and architecture he encountered, and, in 1885, he visited New Zealand and Australia, staying in Victoria until 1889. The present work is characteristic of Carabain's evocative street scenes, with similar works including those which sold at Christie's, London, on 27 October 2000, lot 10 (£21,150), and at Sotheby's, New York, on 14 April 2026, lot 163 ($14,080).
