Carl Schleicher, Ukranian 1825-1903- A pair of scenes depicting seated drinkers: A man pouring beer in a glass; and A man smoking a pipe; each oil on panel, each signed 'C. Schleicher' (lower right), each indistinctly inscribed verso, each 20.9 x 15.3 cm., a pair (2). Provenance: Anon. sale, Christie's, New York, 28 March 2000, lot 56 ($1,380). Private Collection, UK. Note: Carl Schleicher was born in Lviv, previously known as Lemberg, one of the biggest cities in Ukraine, and died in Padua, Italy. He trained in Vienna under Ferdinand Georg Waldmüller (1793-1865), from whom he acquired a style focused on representing the everyday life and customs of 'types', such as men drinking and smoking, monks writing, tradesmen working, or Rabbis studying the scriptures. His works also show the clear influence of Dutch 17th century painting, particularly from artists such as Adriaen van Ostade (1610-1685) or Willem van Mieris (1662-1747).
