William Stephen Coleman, British 1829-1904- A young girl with a ball of string playing with a kitten on a terrace, in a Mediterranean landscape; oil on canvas, signed 'W. S. Coleman' (lower left), 40.5 x 63.5 cm. Provenance: Private Collection, UK. Note: Coleman was a prominent illustrator, whose works exhibit an affinity with those of Myles Birket Foster (1825-1899) and Albert Joseph Moore (1841-1893), particularly in the Classically-inspired settings and costumes which characterised both Moore and Coleman's output. Similar compositions, featuring children playing in what appears to be a fancifully exotic terrace, repeatedly appear in Coleman's oeuvre, with similar examples including a painting which sold at Dorotheum, Vienna, on 25 April 2018, lot 1133 (€12,500), as well as another version of the same subject which sold at Sotheby's, London, on 11 November 1998, lot 173 (£6,900).
