James Vivien de Fleury, British 1847-1902- Morning! The fisherman's departure; oil on canvas, indistinctly inscribed on the reverse '"Morning! The fisherman's departure" / Étretat, coast of Normandy / JV de Fleury London 1893[?]', bears label inscribed 'BEACH / SCENE / DE. FLEURY' to the reverse of the frame, 61 x 60.5 cm. Provenance: Private Collection, UK. Note: The present work is a typical example of de Fleury's coastal scenes, recalling similar works which can be found in the collection of the Guernsey Museum [GUEMG : GMAG 1992.115/6; GUEMG : GMAG 1992.91] and Government House, Jersey [SJA/0000/00589]. The emotional intensity of the present scene is amplified by the atmospheric light of the rising sun. Étretat, a picturesque fishing village on the Normandy coast is renowned for its dramatic cliffs and beaches.
