Giovanni Battista Tiepolo, Italian 1696-1770- Death giving an audience, Plate 8 from 'Vari Capricci'; etching on laid paper, signed 'Tiepolo' (within the plate, lower left, on stone pedestal), 14.2 x 17.6 cm. Provenance: Private Collection, UK. Note: Although Tiepolo is best known for his grand frescoes in Venice, Wurzburg, Madrid, and other locations, he was also an accomplished etcher. He produced two series: the 'Capricci', executed circa 1740-1742, to which the present lot belongs, and 'Scherzi di fantasia' (c.1743-1757).The 'Capricci' comprise a set of 10 etchings of eccentric and whimsical subjects. They were likely influenced by the drawings of Salvator Rosa (1615-1673) and Giovanni Benedetto Castiglione, known as Il Grechetto (1609-1664).In the present etching, Death, personified as the skeletal figure at lower right, sits on the floor giving an audience to a variety of characters, including a dog.
