Pieter Neefs the Younger, Dutch 1620-after 1675- An architectural fantasy, with the angel appearing to St Peter; oil on panel, indistinctly signed 'PEETER NEEffS' (upper left), bears indistinctly inscribed label attached verso, bears number in chalk '689' verso, 25 x 21.6 cm. Note: The closely-studied architectural features here, particularly the columns, vaulted ceiling, and chequerboard flooring below, are typical of Neefs's paintings, which often, but not exclusively, depict church interiors. This composition heavily recalls Neefs's depiction of the same subject in a pair of oils which sold at Sotheby's, London, on 10 July 2014, lot 181, and in his painting which sold in the same rooms on 5 April 1995, lot 14.
