MONTSERRAT GUDIOL COROMINA (Barcelona, 1933–2015). “Pensive Young Woman.” Engraving, print no. 43/50. Signed, dated, and inscribed by hand. Measurements: 20 x 28 cm (print); 50 x 65 cm (paper); 60 x 75 cm (frame). A Catalan painter, draftsman, and printmaker, Montserrat Gudiol was one of the most distinctive figures in Spanish painting of the second half of the 20th century. The daughter of the renowned art historian Josep Gudiol Ricart, she trained in the family’s medieval painting restoration workshop, an experience that left a profound mark on her artistic sensibility. She began exhibiting her work in 1950 and soon gained international recognition, subsequently exhibiting in Europe, the United States, South Africa, Japan, Canada, and the former Soviet Union. She developed a deeply personal figurative language, intimate and symbolic in nature, often featuring female figures, scenes of motherhood, and stylized characters immersed in silent and mysterious atmospheres. His painting is distinguished by the delicacy of his draftsmanship, his blurred forms, and a marked psychological dimension, with echoes of medieval painting, Surrealism, and certain aspects of Picasso’s work. In 1960, she won the First International Drawing Prize from the Ynglada-Guillot Foundation, and in 1980 she created a monumental Saint Benedict for the Abbey of Montserrat. The following year, she became the first woman to be admitted as a full member of the Royal Catalan Academy of Fine Arts of Sant Jordi, one of the major milestones of her career. In 1998, she received the Cross of Saint George from the Government of Catalonia. Her work is represented in prominent public and private collections, establishing Gudiol as one of the most recognizable voices in contemporary Catalan figurative art.
