Otto Erhardt (Coswig 1869 - 1942 Coswig) Outlook, 1912 (Helene Erfurth) gelatin silver print 28 x 39 cm verso label showing Author, Title, Date and label Ernemann Werke Dresden mounted SCHÄTZPREIS / ESTIMATE € 700 - 1200 STARTPREIS / STARTING PRICE € 700 Otto Ehrhardt (1869–1942) is a figure associated with early German art photography; he began working as an amateur art photographer in 1894. While employed as a teacher in Coswig, he focused particularly on landscape and nature photography, though he also produced portraits and cityscapes. A significant personal connection within the contemporary photography scene was his friendship with Hugo Erfurth, with whom he undertook photographic excursions in the countryside around Dresden. Within the sphere of German art photography, his work stands alongside that of Hugo Erfurth, Rudolf Dührkoop, Fritz Ette, Georg Ferner, and H. M. Carstensen; Ehrhardt—like these other photographers—was represented in the catalogue for the 1904 St. Louis exhibition on the book trade and photography. Ehrhardt’s photographs belong to the context of Pictorialist art photography, which emerged around 1900 and emphasized landscapes, portraits, and atmospheric visual effects. His work was published in contemporary specialist journals such as *Photographische Rundschau* and is preserved today in museum collections, among others. Together with photographers such as Hugo Erfurth and Rudolf Dührkoop, as well as contemporaries like Fritz Ette, Georg Ferner, and H. M. Carstensen, Otto Ehrhardt represents the diverse German photography scene of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
