Antoine d’Agata* (born 1961 in Marseille) New York, 1991 gelatin silver print 24 x 30 cm verso signed and dated later print from 2025 SCHÄTZPREIS / ESTIMATE € 800 - 1400 STARTPREIS / STARTING PRICE € 800 Antoine d’Agata (born 1961 in Marseille) is a French photographer and filmmaker whose radical visual language straddles the realms of subjective documentary, night photography, portraiture, the nude, and experimental photography. Since the 1990s, he has photographed people and situations on the social and geographical fringes, combining personal experience with an aesthetic that is deliberately fragmented, often blurred, and high-contrast. Themes such as nightlife, sexuality, drugs, travel, violence, and precarious ways of life are explored not from the perspective of a detached observer, but from a position of immediate personal proximity. D’Agata became a member of Magnum Photos in 2004; alongside this, he has produced numerous photobooks, films, and multimedia projects in which the boundaries between documentary observation and subjective staging increasingly blur. His work belongs to a tradition of subjective, body-centric documentary photography comparable to that of Larry Clark and Nan Goldin. Like Clark and Goldin, he combines intimate closeness to his subjects with a deliberately personal visual style, focusing his gaze on milieus, relationships, and lifestyles that lie beyond conventional societal portrayals. Within Magnum Photos, d’Agata is also associated with photographers such as Ferdinando Scianna, Erich Hartmann, and Hiroji Kubota, who represent various forms of international reportage and documentary photography. Éric Lartigau can also be cited as a point of reference within his broader cinematic context. In doing so, d’Agata’s work shifts classical reportage photography toward a visual language that is subjective, experimental, and existential.
