Lucio Fontana* (Rosario 1899 - 1968 Comabbio) Room concept, 1955 lithograph/paper 32 x 21 cm signed Fontana, dated 55 SCHÄTZPREIS / ESTIMATE € 1200 - 2400 STARTPREIS / STARTING PRICE € 1200 Lucio Fontana was an Argentine-Italian sculptor, painter, and theorist. As the founder of Spatialism, he ranks among the pivotal innovators of post-war European art. Through his punctured and slashed canvases, he fundamentally challenged the traditional concept of the picture as a closed surface. Fontana grew up primarily in Milan; he initially worked in the studio of his father—a sculptor—and began his studies at the Accademia di Brera in 1928. He started by creating sculptures and ceramics before increasingly focusing his work on questions of space, light, movement, and material. During a stay in Buenos Aires in 1946, he produced the Manifiesto Blanco, which called for an art form that incorporated space, time, movement, light, and new technological possibilities. After returning to Milan, Fontana developed Spatialism and his Concetto spaziale (Spatial Concept) series. From 1949 onwards, he pierced the canvas with holes (buchi), followed in 1958 by the famous tagli—precisely executed cuts in predominantly monochrome picture surfaces. The space behind the picture support thus became an integral part of the work. In addition, Fontana created ceramics, metalworks, and walk-in ambienti spaziali (spatial environments) that combined light, color, and architecture. PLEASE NOTE: The purchase price consists of the highest bid plus the buyer's premium, sales tax and, if applicable, the fee of artists resale rights and platform fee. In the case of normal taxation (marked ° at the estimate), a premium of 24% is added to the highest bid. The mandatory sales tax is added to the sum of the highest bid, the buyer's premium and platform fee. This amounts to 13% for paintings, drawings, graphic works and sculptures and 20% for photographs and all other items. The buyer's premium amounts to 28% in case of differential taxation. The sales tax is included in the differential taxation.
