Jim Dine* (born in Cincinnati 1935) Venus, 1989 color aquatint etching/paper 45 x 30,5 cm signed Dine, dated 1989 numbered 66/100 SCHÄTZPREIS / ESTIMATE € 600 - 1200 STARTPREIS / STARTING PRICE € 600 After studying at the University of Cincinnati, the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, and Ohio University—where he earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 1957—Dine moved to New York in 1958. There, he became part of the circle surrounding Allan Kaprow, Claes Oldenburg, and Robert Whitman, participating in early "Happenings"—experimental, boundary-blurring actions that bridged the gap between art and everyday life. Around 1960, Dine developed a distinctive visual language in which he combined real objects—such as tools, garments, shoes, and household items—with painterly and graphic elements. Tools, in particular, hold biographical significance for him: they evoke his grandfather’s hardware store in Cincinnati and became symbols of labor, heritage, and identity. Since the 1960s, recurring motifs in his work have included hearts, bathrobes, palettes, Pinocchio figures, tools, and ancient sculptures. However, Dine never treats these subjects merely illustratively; through bold use of color, expressive line work, and frequent repetition, he transforms them into personal symbols and forms of self-portraiture. He is considered one of the most significant American artists of his generation, particularly in the realm of printmaking—encompassing lithography, etching, woodcut, and other techniques. Dine’s work has been featured in numerous solo exhibitions worldwide and is held in major museum collections, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the National Gallery of Art in Washington, the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, and the Centre Pompidou in Paris. Spanning more than six decades, his practice fuses the immediate gesture of drawing and painting with a uniquely personal iconography. PLEASE NOTE: The purchase price consists of the highest bid plus the buyer's premium, sales tax and, if applicable, the fee of artists resale rights and platform fee. In the case of normal taxation (marked ° at the estimate), a premium of 24% is added to the highest bid. The mandatory sales tax is added to the sum of the highest bid, the buyer's premium and platform fee. This amounts to 13% for paintings, drawings, graphic works and sculptures and 20% for photographs and all other items. The buyer's premium amounts to 28% in case of differential taxation. The sales tax is included in the differential taxation.
