Donald Judd* (Excelsior Springs 1928 - 1994 Manhattan) Untitled, 1969 Offset lithography/paper 44,5 x 31,5 cm signed Judd, numbered 96/180 SCHÄTZPREIS / ESTIMATE € 800 - 1400 STARTPREIS / STARTING PRICE € 800 Donald Judd was an American artist, art critic, and designer, and a pivotal figure in Minimalism. Although his work is frequently associated with this movement, Judd rejected the terms "Minimal Art" and "sculpture" in reference to his own work; instead, he coined the term "Specific Objects" to describe autonomous, three-dimensional works existing in real space. Judd studied philosophy and art history at Columbia University in New York and worked as an art critic starting in the late 1950s. Following early paintings and reliefs, he developed a pared-down, serial formal language beginning in 1962. His works—constructed from industrially manufactured materials such as steel, aluminum, copper, Plexiglas, and wood—are based on clear, fundamental geometric shapes, repetition, proportion, and the interplay between object, color, and space. He articulated this approach in his influential 1965 essay Specific Objects, a seminal text of Minimal Art. Characteristic examples include his wall-mounted "Stacks"—featuring identical elements arranged vertically at regular intervals—as well as freestanding boxes and floor-based works. These pieces eschew illusionistic representation and subjective expression in favor of an immediate experience of material, scale, and spatial presence. Judd also designed furniture and engaged deeply with architecture and the permanent, site-specific presentation of art. Starting in 1973, he acquired buildings and land in Marfa, Texas, to showcase his own work and that of other artists in permanent installations. PLEASE NOTE: The purchase price consists of the highest bid plus the buyer's premium, sales tax and, if applicable, the fee of artists resale rights and platform fee.
