Georg Baselitz* (Kamenz 1938 - 2026 Salzburg) Gothic girl, 1995 colour etching/paper 28 x 17 cm signed Baselitz, dated 95 numbered 9/15 SCHÄTZPREIS / ESTIMATE € 500 - 1000 STARTPREIS / STARTING PRICE € 500 Georg Baselitz was born on January 23, 1938, in Deutschbaselitz (near Kamenz) in Saxony; in 1961, he adopted the name of his hometown as his artist name. After discontinuing his studies at the Academy of Fine and Applied Arts in East Berlin in 1957, he continued his training at the Academy of Arts in West Berlin under Hann Trier. There, he became acquainted with the international post-war avant-garde. As early as the 1960s, Baselitz developed a provocative form of "New Figuration" that ran counter to the prevailing tastes of the time. His figures—deformed and appearing vulnerable or grotesque—set against barren landscapes draw upon the Expressionism of Edvard Munch, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, and Karl Schmidt-Rottluff. Together with Eugen Schönebeck, he drafted the Pandämonium Manifesto in 1961–62, which opposed academic conventions as well as art that was purely abstract or driven by political agendas. His first solo exhibition in Berlin in 1963 sparked the "Pandämonium Scandal" after two of his paintings were confiscated. From 1969 onwards, Baselitz began painting his subjects upside down—rotated 180 degrees. This inversion of the image, foreshadowed by his Fracture Paintings (Frakturbilder), shifted the focus away from narrative legibility and toward color, gesture, composition, and the materiality of the image itself. In doing so, he became a key pioneer of Neo-Expressionism and the *Neue Wilde* (New Fauves) movement. His visceral figurative style invites comparison with Philip Guston on an international level, and with Jörg Immendorff and A. R. Penck within the context of German post-war art; Neo Rauch represents a younger generation influenced by this development. In addition to painting, Baselitz created wood sculptures, drawings, and prints. In 1980, he represented the Federal Republic of Germany at the Venice Biennale alongside Anselm Kiefer. After holding professorships in Berlin, he lived in Salzburg from 2013 onwards and obtained Austrian citizenship in 2015. Georg Baselitz died in Salzburg on April 30, 2026.
