Born in Málaga on October 25, 1881, the son of an art teacher, he briefly studied at the La Llotja art academy in Barcelona before moving to the Bateau-Lavoir in Paris in 1904; there, between 1907 and 1914, he developed Cubism alongside Georges Braque—spanning works from Les Demoiselles d’Avignon (1907) to Analytical Cubist pieces such as Ma Jolie (1911/12). He initiated collaborations with Jean Cocteau for the Ballets Russes in 1919, joined the French Communist Party after 1945, and was awarded the Lenin Peace Prize in 1958. Picasso created works spanning Analytical and Synthetic Cubism, Neoclassicism in the 1920s (with references to Ingres), Surrealist imagery such as The Weeping Woman (1937), and symbolic doves—most notably the Dove of Peace (1949)—characterized by a fragmented formal language, multi-perspective spatial breakdown, and an expressive color palette, all influenced by Paul Cézanne, African sculpture, and classical antiquity. His oeuvre comprises over 50,000 works in oil, drawing, bronze, and ceramics, including key pieces like Guernica (1937), the works of the Blue Period, numerous creations from his time at the Bateau-Lavoir, and a complex dialogue with artists such as Georges Braque, Henri Matisse, Juan Gris, and Max Ernst, as well as writers like Guillaume Apollinaire. In an art-historical context, key artists and concepts—such as Georges Braque, Henri Matisse, Juan Gris, Guillaume Apollinaire, Cubism, Synthetic Cubism, the Bateau-Lavoir, the Ballets Russes, Guernica, the Musée Picasso Paris, Paul Cézanne, Analytical Cubism, the Blue Period, and Max Ernst—define the dynamic interplay between the avant-garde, the literary milieu, and Picasso’s stylistic evolution.
