Marino Marini* (Pistoia 1901 - 1980 Viareggio) Miracolo, 1965 lithography/paper 75 x 54 cm signed Marino, numbered 68/125 SCHÄTZPREIS / ESTIMATE € 250 - 400 STARTPREIS / STARTING PRICE € 250 Marino Marini was born on February 27, 1901, in Pistoia. In 1917, he began his studies at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Florence, where he studied painting under Galileo Chini and sculpture under Domenico Trentacoste. Although he painted and drew throughout his life, from about 1922 onwards he devoted himself primarily to sculpture. His early works combine influences from ancient, Etruscan, Romanesque, and Early Renaissance art with the formal concerns of the contemporary avant-garde. In 1929, Marini became a professor of sculpture at the Scuola d’Arte di Villa Reale in Monza. During the 1930s, he developed his central series of works: the Pomone—female figures characterized by a calm, self-contained monumentality—and the Horsemen, which became his best-known motif. While the early horse-and-rider groups initially convey a sense of balance and harmony, the figures appear increasingly caught in dramatic motion after World War II: horses rear up, and riders lose their grip or fall. Marini traveled to Paris in the 1920s, where he encountered the European avant-garde circles surrounding Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque. From 1940, he taught at the Accademia di Brera in Milan and, following the war, his work was exhibited internationally. In 1948, Peggy Guggenheim acquired one of his Horsemen sculptures; the bronze cast L’angelo della città (Angel of the City) still stands outside her collection in Venice today. In addition to working in bronze, terracotta, and plaster, Marini also created paintings, drawings, etchings, and lithographs. In 1952, he received the Grand Prize for Sculpture at the Venice Biennale. His work fuses archaic formal austerity with the experience of violence, war, and social upheaval. He died on August 6, 1980, in Viareggio. PLEASE NOTE: The purchase price consists of the highest bid plus the buyer's premium, sales tax and, if applicable, the fee of artists resale rights and platform fee. In the case of normal taxation (marked ° at the estimate), a premium of 24% is added to the highest bid. The mandatory sales tax is added to the sum of the highest bid, the buyer's premium and platform fee. This amounts to 13% for paintings, drawings, graphic works and sculptures and 20% for photographs and all other items. The buyer's premium amounts to 28% in case of differential taxation. The sales tax is included in the differential taxation.
