Jean Dubuffet* (Le Havre 1901 - 1985 Paris) Elegies, 1946 lithograph/paper 21 x 22 cm SCHÄTZPREIS / ESTIMATE € 200 - 400 STARTPREIS / STARTING PRICE € 200 Jean Dubuffet was a French painter, sculptor, draftsman, and printmaker, as well as a central figure in post-war European art. He became best known as the founder and theorist of Art Brut, an artistic concept that championed creative works created outside the bounds of academic and cultural conventions. After a brief period of study at the Académie Julian in Paris, Dubuffet initially turned away from the art world, working for a time in his family's wine business. From 1942 onwards, he dedicated himself entirely to art. His early works consciously challenged traditional notions of beauty and technical perfection; figures, bodies, faces, and landscapes appear raw and immediate, often executed with a strong emphasis on materiality. In doing so, he experimented with materials such as sand, tar, plaster, and cement. In 1945, Dubuffet coined the term Art Brut to describe works by self-taught artists and individuals operating outside the established art world—including psychiatric patients, prisoners, and social outcasts. In 1948, he co-founded the Compagnie de l’Art Brut alongside other intellectuals and collectors; his collection later formed the core of the Collection de l’Art Brut in Lausanne. Starting in 1962, Dubuffet developed the L’Hourloupe cycle, characterized by black outlines and areas of red, blue, and white; the series expanded from drawings and paintings to include sculptures and immersive, walk-through environments. Through his work and writings, Dubuffet had a lasting influence on the discourse surrounding outsider art, self-taught creativity, and the boundaries of the concept of art itself. PLEASE NOTE: The purchase price consists of the highest bid plus the buyer's premium, sales tax and, if applicable, the fee of artists resale rights and platform fee.
