He held his first solo exhibition as early as 1992, just one year after completing his studies. Wood—predominantly spruce—lies at the heart of his work. Haberpointner works the material using an axe, saw, chainsaw, hatchet, drills, and nails; he stains, burns, or coats it with pigments, and occasionally combines it with metal, lead, or concrete. The traces of these physical interventions remain visible, making the process of working, the passage of time, and the material's inherent resistance central elements of his sculptures. He is particularly well known for his abstracted heads and head-like forms, which oscillate between the figurative and the geometric. Despite their reduced forms, they convey psychological tension, vulnerability, and a palpable presence. In addition, Haberpointner creates large-scale, relief-like wall pieces and freestanding sculptures that engage with volume, weight, proportion, and spatial perception.
