Anton Mahringer* (Neuhausen auf den Fildern 1902 - 1974 Villach) Gail valley, 1936 oil/canvas 64 x 72 cm signed Anton Mahringer, dated 1936 SCHÄTZPREIS / ESTIMATE € 10000 - 16000 STARTPREIS / STARTING PRICE € 10000 Anton Mahringer, a German-Austrian painter and one of the most important representatives of the Nötsch Circle, became known for his sensitive landscape watercolors. His artistic career began at the goldsmiths' school in Schwäbisch Gmünd, where he attended his first painting classes. In 1924, he was accepted to the Stuttgart School of Applied Arts and simultaneously prepared for the entrance examination by attending evening life drawing classes at the Academy. A year later, he became a student in the drawing class of Arnold Waldschmidt, who trained him in figurative precision and compositional rigor. During a summer excursion organized by the Academy, Mahringer visited Tyrol for the first time in 1925; the works of Max Slevogt and the German Expressionists, which he saw at the International Art Exhibition in Dresden in 1926, profoundly influenced his understanding of color and atmosphere. An award from the Academy enabled him to undertake an extended trip to Italy, where he studied the masters of the Quattrocento and Cinquecento, focusing particularly on Leonardo da Vinci and Luca Signorelli. Back in Stuttgart, Mahringer became the first student in Anton Kolig's newly opened painting class, whose personality and expressive power deeply impressed him. During an excursion with Kolig's class, Mahringer first visited Nötsch, where he met Franz Wiegele. Here he began to dedicate himself intensively to landscape painting and developed the distinctive, luminous palette that would later characterize his watercolors. At the end of the 1920s, Mahringer collaborated with other Kolig students on the decoration of the Landhaus in Klagenfurt, where he met important figures such as the art historian Otto Demus and the poet Andreas Fischer. After studying in Rome, where he met François-Albert Viallet, Werner Gilles, and Karl Kluth, he participated in exhibitions at the Carinthian Art Association and the Vienna Secession, where his work greatly impressed, among others, Carl Moll. During the Second World War, Mahringer taught as a secondary school teacher in Hermagor and forged friendships with Anton Steinhart and the art dealer Friedrich Welz. After the death of Franz Wiegele, Mahringer took over his studio in Kesselwald, thus continuing his role as a central figure in the Nötsch Circle. After 1945, he participated in exhibitions at the Galerie Würthle, initiated by Viktor Matejka, and was commissioned to paint a portrait of Anton Kolig. In the following decades, Mahringer exhibited extensively both in Austria and abroad. A cycle of five landscape paintings was created for the Austrian Embassy in Ottawa, and at the 1957 Vienna Festival, a major solo exhibition was dedicated to him and Ludwig Heinrich Jungnickel at the Künstlerhaus Wien. In 1964, he received a commission from the Austrian Drau Power Plants for a large-format wall mosaic – a late work in which Mahringer's mature synthesis of natural observation and painterly dynamism was impressively manifested.
