Josef Dobrowsky* (Karlsbad 1889 - 1964 Vienna) Grain sheaves oil/wood 34.6 x 51.3 cm monogrammed J.D. SCHÄTZPREIS / ESTIMATE € 3600 - 6000 STARTPREIS / STARTING PRICE € 3600 Josef Dobrowsky was an Austrian painter of the 20th century, primarily of the interwar period, born in Carlsbad (now Karlovy Vary). He began his studies with Franz Hohenberger and from 1906 to 1919 studied at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna under Christian Griepenkerl and Rudolf Bacher – alongside Anton Faistauer, Sebastian Isepp, Ferdinand Kitt, Anton Kolig, Anton Emanuel Peschka, Egon Schiele, and Franz Wiegele. Early influences included Gustav Klimt, Albin Egger-Lienz, Ferdinand Hodler, and Otto Wagner; from 1920 onward, he engaged intensively with the work of Pieter Brueghel the Elder, supplemented by Expressionism, New Objectivity, and Richard Gerstl. Dobrowsky established connections with the Neumarkt Circle (including Ernst Huber, Franz von Zülow, Ferdinand Kitt, and Sergius Pauser). Member of the Vienna Secession (1919, honorary member 1955) and the Prague Secession (1934). In 1930, co-founder of the Zinkenbach artists' colony on Lake Wolfgang (with Huber, Kitt, and others). From 1946 to 1963, professor at the Academy; students included Alfred Hrdlicka, Arnulf Rainer, Giselbert Hoke, Josef Mikl, Wolfgang Hollegha, and Heinrich Maria Hunger. He painted landscapes, still lifes, and genre scenes in earthy tones, later in an expressionist style with intense colors. His work connects Viennese Modernism with that of Max Domenig, Robin Christian Andersen, Paul Kassecker, Herbert Boeckl, Albert Paris Gütersloh, Willy Eisenschitz, Carl Moll, Josef Hoffmann, Matthias Herrmann, Lois Pregartbauer, Rudolf von Alt, Oskar Kokoschka, Koloman Moser, Broncia Koller-Pinell, Anton Mahringer, Joseph Maria Olbrich, and Karl Revy. The mandatory sales tax is added to the sum of the highest bid, the buyer's premium and platform fee. This amounts to 13% for paintings, drawings, graphic works and sculptures and 20% for photographs and all other items. The buyer's premium amounts to 28% in case of differential taxation. The sales tax is included in the differential taxation.
