Marie-Louise von Motesiczky* (Vienna 1906 - 1996 London) People waiting at the airport, 1950 oil/canvas 52 x 69,5 cm depicted in Schlenker, catalogue raisonné Motesiczky, 2009, p. 301, nr. 164 SCHÄTZPREIS / ESTIMATE °€ 1800 - 3000 STARTPREIS / STARTING PRICE °€ 1800 Marie-Louise von Motesiczky, an Austrian painter of the 20th century and a representative of Expressionism, belongs to a forgotten generation. Born into Hungarian nobility on her father's side and a Jewish Viennese banking family on her mother's (her grandmother Anna von Lieben was Freud's first patient, her brother Robert von Lieben invented radio tubes, and her brother Karl Motesiczky was a psychoanalyst who died in Auschwitz-Birkenau in 1943), she left school at the age of 13 and continued her studies privately. From 1922, she attended Carola Machotka's private art school in The Hague, studied at the Städelschule in Frankfurt under Max Beckmann (her mentor and lifelong friend, who saw her as Paula Modersohn-Becker's successor), at the Vienna School of Applied Arts, and at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière in Paris. After the Anschluss, she fled with her mother in 1938 via the Netherlands and London to Amersham (from 1945 onwards, London). She deepened her friendship with Oskar Kokoschka and became the lover/friend of Elias Canetti (a 50-year relationship; their published correspondence reveals their dependence and mutual support). Her travels took her to places including Mexico, where she met Wolfgang Paalen in 1958. She received belated recognition: an exhibition at the Goethe-Institut in London in 1985 (an initiative of Hilde Spiel), and in 1994 at the Belvedere Gallery in Austria. Her work—unembellished portraits of her mother, self-portraits, and symbolic still lifes—exhibits realism, New Objectivity, and figuration with the influence of Beckmann (enigmatic object arrangements, e.g., "Still Life with Cigarettes," 1928, cigarettes as a symbol of female emancipation). Parallels to Otto Dix, Alice Neel, Lotte Laserstein, Christian Schad, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Wassily Kandinsky, Franz Marz, Gabriele Münter, Emil Nolde, Erich Heckel, Karl Schmidt-Rottluff, Egon Schiele, Oskar Kokoschka, Brücke, Cuno Amiet, Max Pechstein, Alexei von Jawlensky, August Macke, Paul Klee, Der blaue Reiter; Colleagues such as Friedrich Aduatz, Franz Bronstert, Marc Chagall, Lyonel Feininger, Fritz Fuhrken, Richard Gerstl, Anna Lesznai, Paula Modersohn-Becker, Edvard Munch, Emil Nolde, Max Oppenheimer, Marianne von Werefkin, Georg Philipp Wörlen, Lilly Pollatschek, Josef Gassler, Karl Hauk, Rudolf Dischinger, Otto Dix, Dodo, August Wilhelm Dressler, Conrad Felixmüller, George Grosz, Sergius Pauser, Gerta Overbeck, Franz Radziwill, Otto Rudolf Schatz, Franz Sedlacek, Franz Sikora, Rudolf Wacker, Albert Birkle, Max Beckmann, Albin Egger-Lienz, Alfons Walde, Herbert Reyl-Hanisch, Josef Floch, Carry Hauser, Albert Paris Gütersloh, Lois Pregartbauer, and Georg Jung. "If you paint just one good picture in your lifetime, it was worth your whole life"—that was her credo at age 16. PLEASE NOTE: The purchase price consists of the highest bid plus the buyer's premium, sales tax and, if applicable, the fee of artists resale rights and platform fee. In the case of normal taxation (marked ° at the estimate), a premium of 24% is added to the highest bid. The mandatory sales tax is added to the sum of the highest bid, the buyer's premium and platform fee. This amounts to 13% for paintings, drawings, graphic works and sculptures and 20% for photographs and all other items. The buyer's premium amounts to 28% in case of differential taxation. The sales tax is included in the differential taxation.
