Emil von Gerliczy (Wolfsbüchel 1871 - 1924 Zurich) In the billiard café, ca 1918 oil/cardboard 69,5 x 91 cm verso estate stamp SCHÄTZPREIS / ESTIMATE € 2600 - 4000 STARTPREIS / STARTING PRICE € 2600 The early 20th-century painter's work is closely linked to German and Swiss Expressionism. After an initial military career, he decided in 1897 to dedicate himself entirely to art and embarked on an intensive period of travel and study, which took him to Dresden, among other places. There he encountered the new currents of the avant-garde and gained access to the artistic circles that later became known as Die Brücke (The Bridge). His personal encounter with Emil Nolde, as well as his exchange with artists such as Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Erich Heckel, and Karl Schmidt-Rottluff, profoundly influenced his artistic development and led to an increasingly expressive visual language. His painting is characterized by a bold, intensely colored palette and a dynamic, often impasto brushstroke. Typical of his work are figure and landscape depictions that capture everyday life with a blend of vitality and irony. In many of his works, the motif of everyday rural life emerges – scenes from village life, markets, or tavern situations, rendered in free perspective and loosely composed style. The expressive contours and deliberately exaggerated forms lend these paintings an almost caricatured, yet humane character, clearly placing them within the tradition of genre painting, albeit expanded by the emotional intensity of Expressionism. His watercolors and oil paintings combine spontaneity with structural clarity. Landscapes convey less topographical accuracy than emotional resonance – color-saturated memories of places and people where nature and figure merge into a rhythmic unity. In this fusion of color, emotion, and movement, his work engages in direct dialogue with the guiding principles of the Expressionist movement in the first third of the 20th century.
