Theodor Alescha* (Vienna 1898 - 1991 Lilienfeld) Pozzuoli, 1922 pastel/paper 49 x 59 cm signed Alescha depicted in Widder, Alescha, 2003, p. 37 SCHÄTZPREIS / ESTIMATE °€ 800 - 1600 STARTPREIS / STARTING PRICE °€ 800 Theodor Alescha was born on 23 April 1898 in Vienna and died in Lilienfeld in 1991. The Austrian landscape and architectural painter studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna from 1915, under Rudolf Bacher amongst others, and subsequently developed his skills largely through self-study. As a regular exhibitor with the Hagenbund, he was part of the Austrian Modernist movement, situated between atmospheric Impressionism, Expressionism and New Objectivity. From 1918 onwards, numerous journeys took Alescha to Italy, Yugoslavia, Russia, Switzerland, France and Portugal. His favourite subjects were landscapes, mountain views and architectural vedutas; his pastels depicting the Valais Alps are particularly striking. His works combine precise observation of nature with rhythmic lines and a vigorous, at times expressively heightened use of colour. From an art-historical perspective, his oeuvre can be placed within the context of Austrian landscape painting, with points of reference ranging from Rudolf von Alt and Wilhelm Bernatzik to Anton Mahringer, Werner Berg and Oskar Kokoschka. In 1934, Alescha went into exile in Switzerland and, via France, Spain and Portugal, reached the USA in 1941. After his return to Vienna in 1947, he continued his artistic work. Retrospective exhibitions honoured his work in 1984 at the Austrian Gallery Belvedere and in 1998 at the Wien Museum.
