Eduard Bäumer* (Kastellaun 1892 - 1977 Munich) Calabrian coast, 1967 oil pastel/paper 49 x 80 cm SCHÄTZPREIS / ESTIMATE € 1200 - 2400 STARTPREIS / STARTING PRICE € 1200 Eduard Bäumer was a German painter and graphic artist whose work spans Expressionism, New Objectivity, and Cubism. After an apprenticeship as a decorative painter, he began his studies in 1908 at the Frankfurt School of Arts and Crafts under Ludwig Heinrich Jungnickel, followed by the Städel Art Institute, where he was a master student from 1919 to 1922. In 1923, he married his fellow student Valerie Feix. Trips to Cervara di Roma in Italy shaped his approach to landscape painting, while his studies under Johannes Itten in Berlin (1927–28) deepened his interest in color, form, and pictorial composition. During a stay in Paris in 1930–31, he engaged with French modernism, particularly the work of Georges Braque, Fernand Léger, and Raoul Dufy. In 1933, Bäumer moved with his family to Salzburg, where he collaborated with Valerie Bäumer on children's books. In 1937, his works were confiscated as "degenerate art" (Entartete Kunst), and a view of Frankfurt was destroyed. Due to his wife's Jewish heritage, he was banned from exhibiting and was at times subjected to forced labor. Nevertheless, supported by Max Peiffer Watenphul and the priest Balthasar Linsinger, he was able to continue his work. Bäumer returned to Salzburg in 1945 and, in 1948, took charge of the master class for painting at the Academy of Applied Arts in Vienna, where he served as a professor from 1950 onwards. His life story—marked by repression, danger, and artistic marginalization—links him to the "Lost Generation." From 1964, he spent periods living in Tropea, Calabria. Eduard Bäumer died in Munich on January 21, 1977, following a traffic accident. PLEASE NOTE: The purchase price consists of the highest bid plus the buyer's premium, sales tax and, if applicable, the fee of artists resale rights and platform fee.
