Brandwächter niece From G-Mayer-Marton's estate); "31 x 22'' "Poplars & Hill" (North Wales) 1954" SCHÄTZPREIS / ESTIMATE € 2000 - 4000 STARTPREIS / STARTING PRICE € 2000 Georg Mayer-Marton was an Austrian-British painter of the 20th century who enjoyed considerable success in interwar Vienna. He studied at the Vienna Academy under Josef Jungwirth from 1919 to 1922 and subsequently under Carl von Marr in Munich; he also took lessons from Max Dvořák and Franz Čižek. From 1925 until its dissolution in 1938, he was a member of the Hagenbund in Vienna, serving as its secretary and vice-president in later years. His early works were influenced by Expressionism and *Neue Sachlichkeit* (New Objectivity). In his portraits, landscapes, oil paintings, and watercolors, he combined expressive use of color with a clear, representational pictorial structure. Comparable artistic approaches—albeit with distinctly different emphases—can be found in the work of Otto Dix and Käthe Kollwitz, whose art addresses social reality, individual experience, and the tensions of the interwar period. Ernst Ludwig Kirchner represents an expressive intensification of color and form, while Lyonel Feininger, through his crystalline structuring of architecture and landscape, demonstrates significant possibilities for a style of painting that mediates between figuration and abstraction. From the 1950s onwards, Mayer-Marton adopted a more rigorous style that incorporated elements of Cubism and moved increasingly toward abstraction. His deconstruction and reconfiguration of space and objects aligned him with the formal innovations of the European avant-garde. Umberto Boccioni and Gino Severini expanded upon Cubism by integrating the dynamism of Italian Futurism, while Wassily Kandinsky developed a distinctive, increasingly non-representational visual language from these foundations. It was within this interplay of Cubist construction, movement, and abstraction that Mayer-Marton developed his late compositions. In 1938, he emigrated to London with his wife Grete (née Freund) and taught at the St. John’s Wood School of Art. A large portion of his body of work was destroyed during a bombing raid in 1940. His mother and younger brother were victims of the Holocaust. Following the death of his wife, Mayer-Marton taught as a professor at the Arts Council in London from 1943 to 1952, and at the College of Arts in Liverpool from 1952 onwards.
