Viktor Tischler (Vienna 1890 - 1951 Beaulieu-sur-Mer) Southern City square, ca. 1935 probably Avignon oil/canvas 60 x 92,5 cm signed V. Tischler SCHÄTZPREIS / ESTIMATE € 3300 - 5000 STARTPREIS / STARTING PRICE € 3300 Viktor Tischler was a significant Austrian painter of the interwar period, born in Vienna to a Jewish family. At the age of 14, he began studying under David Kohn, and from 1907 to 1912 he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna under Rudolf Bacher and Franz Rumpler, who fostered his talent for portraiture. In 1918, he founded and presided over the artists' association "Neue Vereinigung" (New Association), and from 1920 onward, he was a member of the Hagenbund. Study trips to Holland, Italy, and France significantly influenced his work; a long stay in Paris (1928–1940), influenced by Paul Cézanne, led to portraits, genre paintings, and later landscapes, seascapes of southern France, and engagements with the work of Herbert Boeckl and Oskar Kokoschka. He painted a portrait of Max Oppenheimer and exhibited "Frau Else Lederer" in the 1932 exhibition "Austrian Portraiture of the Present Day." Stylistically, his work ranges from Impressionism through Cézanne, Vincent van Gogh, August Macke, and Ernst Ludwig Kirchner to New Objectivity. As an exile, he fled the Nazis to the USA in 1941, returning to France (Beaulieu-sur-Mer) in 1949. His works are in the Austrian Gallery Belvedere (Vienna) and the Modern Gallery (Prague); he has exhibited in galleries both in Austria and abroad, and his work is associated with the Vienna Secession, the Wiener Werkstätte, and Karl Sterrer.
