He lived in Vienna, became a member of the Secession in 1927 and was awarded the Austrian State Prize in 1932. Study trips in 1938 took him to Italy, France and Switzerland, where he was encouraged in his realistic-expressive style of painting, which engages in a dynamic dialogue with movements such as Expressionism and New Objectivity, as shaped by artists such as Max Beckmann, Otto Dix and Karl Hofer. In 1943, Pauser took over as head of the Master School for Portrait Painting at the Academy and was appointed professor in 1947. In the post-war period, he was a much sought-after portraitist and firmly integrated into the Austrian art scene, which was simultaneously influenced by movements such as Fantastic Realism, represented by artists including Arik Brauer and Ernst Fuchs. His wider artistic circle also included figures such as Josef Dobrowsky, Ernst Huber, Franz von Zülow and Albert Paris Gütersloh, who reflected different facets of Austrian modernism. Pauser produced portraits of many politicians and actors and received numerous prizes and honours. His work was exhibited in a major retrospective at the Österreichische Galerie in 1996 and is held in numerous important collections.
