From 1908 to 1912, he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich under Angelo Jank and Gabriel von Hackl, supplementing his studies with musical training in singing and piano. As a co-founder of the Munich Secession, he maintained a lifelong friendship with Alfred Kubin, served as a regimental painter in the First World War, producing portrait studies and illustrations, and founded the Graz Secession in 1923. In 1925, he married Thea Herrmann-Trautner, daughter of the painter Frank S. Herrmann, and lived in Paris from 1931 to 1938, having first traveled there in 1929. In 1938, he emigrated with his Jewish wife to New York, where a fire in 1948 destroyed the majority of his works. His oeuvre encompasses diverse landscapes, dynamic cityscapes of Paris and New York, and genre scenes that incorporate influences from Edvard Munch and August Macke and combine elements of Impressionism, Expressionism, and Abstraction.
