Reynaldo Luza y Argaluza* (Lima 1893 - 1978 Lima) Lady in cocktail dress, 1928 mixed media/paper dated 1928, monogrammed RLA SCHÄTZPREIS / ESTIMATE °€ 800 - 1200 STARTPREIS / STARTING PRICE °€ 800 Reynaldo Luza y Argaluza was a Peruvian painter, draughtsman, photographer, fashion illustrator, and textile and interior designer. His work combined the international elegance of the Parisian and New York fashion worlds with the colour schemes and ornamental motifs of Peru’s pre-Columbian cultures. After producing his first works for Peruvian magazines, Luza moved to New York in the 1920s and became chief fashion illustrator at Harper’s Bazaar in 1921. In 1922, he moved to Paris, where he worked on international editions of the magazine and came into contact with leading fashion designers such as Paul Poiret, Jean Patou, Coco Chanel, Elsa Schiaparelli and Cristóbal Balenciaga. In 1937, Luza collaborated with Elena and Victoria Izcue on the design of the Peruvian pavilion for the Paris World’s Fair; in 1939–40 he also contributed to the Peruvian pavilion at the New York World’s Fair. Following a trip to South America in 1940, he developed a colour palette for textiles and fashion designs known as ‘Colours of the Andes’, inspired by pre-Columbian fabrics and Andean colour schemes. After returning to Lima in 1950, Luza worked as an interior and textile designer, whilst continuing to devote himself to painting and photography. His portraits, landscapes and views of ancient Peruvian ruins complement a diverse body of work that combines international modernism and Peruvian cultural heritage in an original way.
