As a co-founder and the first president of the Vienna Secession, he championed a modern, internationally oriented approach to art. From 1876 to 1883, Klimt attended the School of Arts and Crafts at the Imperial-Royal Austrian Museum of Art and Industry. Together with his brother Ernst Klimt and Franz Matsch, he founded the "Künstler-Compagnie" (Artists' Company), which executed decorative schemes for prominent Viennese buildings, including the Burgtheater and the Kunsthistorisches Museum. Starting in the 1890s, Klimt developed a distinctive, Symbolist visual language. The controversial "Faculty Paintings" for the University of Vienna led to a definitive break with academic commissioned art. In 1897, he founded the Vienna Secession; its journal, *Ver Sacrum*, became a key mouthpiece for the new art. Klimt became particularly renowned for his portraits of women, allegories, and landscapes. His "Golden Phase" combines ornamental flatness and gold backgrounds with a sensual, Symbolist visual world. His major works include The Kiss (1907/08), Adele Bloch-Bauer I (1907), and the Beethoven Frieze (1902). Klimt died in Vienna on February 6, 1918.
