Egon Schiele (Tulln an der Donau 1890 - 1918 Vienna) Portrait Franz Hauer etching/paper 12,5 x 10,5 cm depicted in Kallir, online catalogue raisonné Schiele, G5B Edition 1964/66 by Otto Kallir SCHÄTZPREIS / ESTIMATE € 1400 - 2000 STARTPREIS / STARTING PRICE € 1400 In 1906, at the age of just sixteen, Egon Schiele began his studies at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna. Two years later, he left the Academy due to its rigid curriculum and founded the *Neukunstgruppe* (New Art Group). Its circle included Anton Peschka, Anton Faistauer, Rudolf Kalvach, Hans Böhler, Erwin Osen, Franz Wiegele, Robin Christian Andersen, and Arthur Löwenstein; later, Oskar Kokoschka, Karl Hofer, Sebastian Isepp, Albert Paris Gütersloh, and Anton Kolig also joined. That same year, Schiele held his first public exhibition. Gustav Klimt championed the young artist, opening doors for him within the exhibition and collector circles of Viennese Modernism. Through Klimt, Schiele also gained access to the milieu of the Vienna Secession, including figures such as Koloman Moser, Josef Hoffmann, and Carl Moll. He soon broke away from their Art Nouveau style in favor of a radical, expressionist visual language—a shift reinforced by his friendship with Max Oppenheimer. Richard Gerstl, Alfred Kubin, Edvard Munch, Vincent van Gogh, and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec serve as important points of comparison for his expressive line work and psychologically charged figuration. In 1909, the critic Arthur Roessler recognized Schiele’s significance, supporting him and helping him secure his first commissions. In 1911, Schiele lived in Krumau and Neulengbach. His depictions of nudes led to a 1912 conviction for the "dissemination of indecent drawings" and a twenty-four-day prison sentence. Wally Neuzil—his companion and a key model—is closely associated with this phase of his work. Schiele returned to Vienna in 1912. His late portraits and figure paintings, often featuring Edith Schiele as his model, demonstrate increasing maturity. In 1918, Edith and Egon Schiele died in quick succession from the Spanish flu. PLEASE NOTE: The purchase price consists of the highest bid plus the buyer's premium, sales tax and, if applicable, the fee of artists resale rights and platform fee. In the case of normal taxation (marked ° at the estimate), a premium of 24% is added to the highest bid. The mandatory sales tax is added to the sum of the highest bid, the buyer's premium and platform fee. This amounts to 13% for paintings, drawings, graphic works and sculptures and 20% for photographs and all other items. The buyer's premium amounts to 28% in case of differential taxation. The sales tax is included in the differential taxation.
