August Rieger (Vienna 1886 - 1941 Vienna) Old Danube, 1938 gouache/paper 24,5 x 31 cm verso estate stamp August Rieger, a charcoal drawing, as well as inscribed Alte Donau, and dated 29. IX. 38 SCHÄTZPREIS / ESTIMATE € 250 - 500 STARTPREIS / STARTING PRICE € 250 August Rieger was a Viennese landscape painter whose work occupies the space between Impressionism and Expressionism. Although he initially aspired to the priesthood, he abandoned his theological studies and worked in the financial sector for a time. He turned to landscape painting only in his mid-thirties, joining the Hagenbund in 1938; the artistic milieu of this group had a lasting influence on him. His body of work is dominated by views of Vienna and its surroundings, complemented by occasional still lifes and portraits that broaden his thematic scope. Despite having no formal academic training—he was entirely self-taught—Rieger earned recognition from critics and peers alike, exhibiting primarily in Viennese art salons. His work can be viewed in the context of significant artists of his era, including Friedrich Aduatz, Eduard Ameseder, Robin Christian Andersen, Franz Barwig the Elder, Leopold Blauensteiner, Hans Bren, Georg Ehrlich, Carl Fahringer, Josef Floch, Beni Ferenczy, Tibor Gergely, Gustav Gurschner, Felix Albrecht Harta, Karl Hauk, Carry Hauser, Wilhelm Hejda, Ludwig Heinrich Jungnickel, Rudolf Junk, Maximilian Kahrer, Eduard Kasparides, Wilhelm Kaufmann, Oskar Laske, Heinrich Lefler, Georg Mayer-Marton, Karl Mediz, Georg Merkel, Carl O’Lynch of Town, Ernst Paar, Anton Peschka, Robert Philippi, Michael Powolny, Heribert Potuznik, Lois Pregartbauer, Maximilian Reinitz, Heinrich Revy, Albert Reuss, Otto Rudolf Schatz, Fritz Schwarz-Waldegg, Maximilian Suppantschitsch, Eduard Thöny, Viktor Tischler, Georg Philipp Wörlen, as well as Bettina Ehrlich, Anna Lesznai, Louise Merkel-Romée, Frieda Salvendy, and Lilly Steiner. Connections can also be drawn to established figures in Viennese art history—such as Carl Moll, Alfred Roller, Rudolf von Alt, Franz Wiegele, Hans Pacher, and Rudolf Hitzig—whose works helped shape the artistic landscape of the time. PLEASE NOTE: The purchase price consists of the highest bid plus the buyer's premium, sales tax and, if applicable, the fee of artists resale rights and platform fee. In the case of normal taxation (marked ° at the estimate), a premium of 24% is added to the highest bid. The mandatory sales tax is added to the sum of the highest bid, the buyer's premium and platform fee. This amounts to 13% for paintings, drawings, graphic works and sculptures and 20% for photographs and all other items. The buyer's premium amounts to 28% in case of differential taxation. The sales tax is included in the differential taxation.
