Maximilian Reinitz (Vienna 1872 - 1935 Vienna) Village view mixed media/paper 18 x 14 cm signed Reinitz verso drawing of a Church SCHÄTZPREIS / ESTIMATE °€ 800 - 1600 STARTPREIS / STARTING PRICE °€ 800 Maximilian Reinitz was an Austrian painter and a distinctive representative of Austrian art during the interwar period. From 1898 to 1902, he studied at the Munich Academy of Fine Arts under Johann Herterich, Ludwig von Herterich, Carl von Marr, and Peter von Halm. He subsequently worked in Budapest, Dresden, and Berlin; from 1914 onwards, he was active in Vienna. Study trips took him to Italy, Germany, and Albania. From 1922 until his untimely death in 1935, Reinitz was an honorary member of the Hagenbund—a progressive Viennese artists' association that, during the 1920s, united various strands of modernism ranging from Expressionism and Cubism to New Objectivity (Neue Sachlichkeit). Reinitz’s body of work encompasses oil paintings featuring landscapes, cityscapes, portraits, and figurative subjects. His painting style—often precise and structured into prismatically refracted planes of color and form—combines Cubist compositional order with an objective, focused observation of reality that at times conveys social criticism. His affinity for New Objectivity is particularly evident in urban and industrial motifs such as Factory in the Suburbs (1930), yet he never sacrifices painterly intensity or his distinctive use of color for the sake of a purely sober depiction. Within the Hagenbund, Reinitz belonged to a wide-ranging and stylistically diverse circle of artists. Artists such as Friedrich Aduatz, Eduard Ameseder, Robin Christian Andersen, Franz Barwig the Elder, Leopold Blauensteiner, Hans Bren, Georg Ehrlich, Carl Fahringer, Josef Floch, Beni Ferenczy, Tibor Gergely, Gustav Gurschner, Felix Albrecht Harta, Karl Hauk, Carry Hauser, Wilhelm Hejda, Ludwig Heinrich Jungnickel, Rudolf Junk, Maximilian Kahrer, Eduard Kasparides, Wilhelm Kaufmann, Oskar Laske, Heinrich Lefler, Georg Mayer-Marton, Karl Mediz, Georg Merkel, Ernst Paar, Anton Peschka, Robert Philippi, Michael Powolny, Heribert Potuznik, Lois Pregartbauer, Heinrich Revy, Albert Reuss, Otto Rudolf Schatz, Fritz Schwarz-Waldegg, Maximilian Suppantschitsch, Eduard Thöny, Viktor Tischler, and Georg Philipp Wörlen represent the broad circle surrounding the Hagenbund and Austrian Modernism. At the same time, female artists such as Bettina Ehrlich, Anna Lesznai, Louise Merkel-Romée, Frieda Salvendy, and Lilly Steiner were part of the extended Hagenbund and Viennese art milieu. Their diverse contributions to painting, graphic art, textile art, illustration, and applied arts illustrate the association’s openness to various media and artistic positions.
