Heinrich Schröder (Krefeld 1881 - 1942 Innsbruck) Courtyard color woodcut/paper 39 x 31,4 cm inscribed Probdedruck, estate stamp Heinrich Schröder monogrammed in the plate HS SCHÄTZPREIS / ESTIMATE °€ 300 - 500 STARTPREIS / STARTING PRICE °€ 300 Heinrich Schröder was born in Krefeld in 1881 and died in Innsbruck in 1942. The painter and graphic artist studied in Berlin, Weimar, and Paris between 1899 and 1903. After moving to Vienna in 1905, he found support within the circle of Hugo Koller and Broncia Koller-Pinell and encountered the artistic atmosphere of Viennese Modernism. From 1906 to 1911, Schröder shared a studio with Koller-Pinell; through the Kunstschau—an exhibition closely linked to Gustav Klimt—he gained significant exposure to contemporary artistic impulses. Printmaking also holds a place of particular importance within his body of work. Schröder devoted himself with evident interest to the woodcut—including the color woodcut—as the medium’s concentrated planar effects and striking contours complemented his expressive visual language. His graphic works explore architectural, landscape, and natural motifs, demonstrating a masterful blend of precision in drawing, compositional condensation, and decorative use of color. His engagement with Austrian Expressionism is significant for his landscape depictions; the expressive stylization of natural forms and the dynamic composition of the images are particularly reminiscent of Egon Schiele. After 1914, Schröder lived in Munich and was closely associated with the Munich Secession. His work thus bridges Viennese Modernism, the woodcut tradition of classical modernism, Expressionism, and—in later works—a more objective, representational approach to imagery.
