Angela Hitler Typed Letter Signed from the Berghof, Interceding with Nazi Interior Minister Wilhelm Frick on Behalf of Catholic Nursing Sisters Elder half-sister (1883-1949) of Adolf Hitler and the mother of Geli Raubal, who died mysteriously in Hitler's apartment in 1931. TLS in German, signed “Geli,” one page both sides, 8.25 x 11.75, March 20, 1940. Letter to Hans Pant, sent from Hitler's holiday home in the Bavarian Alps, the 'Berghof.' In part (translated): "Please excuse my not having replied until now to your kind letter, but for the last four weeks I have been at the Berghof with my granddaughter, and so I had no chance to write. I have read your sister-in-law's letter, i.e., the petition, and agree entirely with you that one cannot possibly set out a plea for special treatment in this form—particularly when it has already been turned down previously.... As for the other affair, it was clear to me, when the welfare worker called on me, that not much more could be done from the Berlin direction, when the area governor had already given a ruling—because he was anyway a difficult job and Berlin cannot put a spoke in his wheel. But you are quite mistaken in commenting that some trouble could arise for me on this account. If anyone comes to me for help, my duty is to give me support, and I could never get into difficulties for doing so. So don't worry on that account. I got from Dr. Frick, the minister, a letter dated 17.3, and reading as follows:—'I have been unable to reply until now...with reference to two sisters of the Holy Cross in Laxenburg and the Hans and Anna Sauer Institute for Child Education in Vienna, since the enquiries which I have been making could not be completed earlier. My ministry has concerned itself on several occasions with the Holy Cross School of Nursing. After a thorough and sympathetic examination of the whole issue as it has actually developed, I must however clearly state, from the point of view of the law, that recognition of the school ceased legally even before 6th December 1938. Since I gather, nevertheless, that the Laxenburg sisters operated in good faith in training nurses until now, I have approved full recognition to the training given there until the end of the month.'... We have spent a marvellous period here, although there has been no great amount of sunshine. But with the beautiful surroundings, the wonderful house and all the trimmings, one can really relax a bit. But in a couple of days I shall be setting off home again. My husband is now stationed right on the frontier, on active service with his engineers, and naturally cannot come on leave, but I should like to be at home for the holidays." In very good to fine condition, with central vertical and horizontal folds and a few scattered stains. Johann 'Hans' Pant, a Catholic priest, had known Adolf Hitler for years and maintained connections with the Hitler family. Pant officiated at the September 23, 1931, funeral of Hitler's niece, Geli Raubal, whose mysterious death in Hitler's Munich apartment had been officially ruled a suicide. Pant subsequently questioned that explanation, declaring in a 1939 newspaper statement that he would never have permitted a suicide to receive a Catholic burial.
