Joachim von Ribbentrop Document Signed at Nuremberg, Seeking Lord Kemsley’s Testimony on Anglo-German Relations Partly-printed DS, in German, signed “J. v. Ribbentrop,” one page, 8 x 12.75, November 13, 1945. Document headed (translated), "The International Military Tribunal, Defendant's Application for Summons for Witness," made while preparing his defense for the Nuremberg trials. Ribbentrop and his defense lawyer request testimony from "Lord Kensley [sic]," citing his knowledge of these facts: "For over ten years I endeavored to bring about a close friendship and an alliance with Great Britain, for which purpose I had also discussions with the witness along these very lines." Ribbentrop states that the testimony is necessary "to refute the accusation that I participated in any preparation for a war of aggression." Signed at the conclusion in pencil by Joachim von Ribbentrop, and countersigned by his defense counsel. Backed by lightweight cardstock and in fine condition. Accompanied by a contemporary English translation. James Gomer Berry, 1st Viscount Kemsley, was a prominent British newspaper proprietor and one of several establishment figures Ribbentrop sought to enlist in support of his Nuremberg defense. Like his applications for Lord Londonderry, Lord Derby, the Duke of Buccleuch, and Lord Beaverbrook, the request was intended to show that Ribbentrop’s prewar contacts with leading Britons reflected a sincere effort to achieve Anglo-German friendship rather than preparation for aggressive war. The Tribunal denied Ribbentrop's request to subpoena Kemsley and the other British figures, viewing the applications as an irrelevant attempt to relitigate prewar diplomacy rather than address personal criminal responsibility; Kemsley therefore never testified. Ribbentrop was convicted on all four counts, including crimes against peace, and hanged on October 16, 1946.
