Japanese Surrender: Nimitz, MacArthur, Wainwright, and Percival Signed First Day Cover FDC with an affixed book photo of the signing of the Japanese surrender in 1945, signed in fountain pen by Chester Nimitz ("C. W. Nimitz"), Douglas MacArthur ("Doug MacA."), Jonathan Wainwright ("J. M. Wainwright"), and A. E. Percival ("Arthur E. Percival, Lt. Gen."). In fine condition. This remarkable cover brings together four senior Allied commanders whose wartime experiences converged at Japan’s formal surrender aboard the USS Missouri on September 2, 1945. MacArthur signed the Instrument of Surrender as Supreme Commander for the Allied Powers, while Nimitz signed on behalf of the United States. Also present at the ceremony were Generals Jonathan Wainwright and Arthur Percival, recently liberated from Japanese captivity after surrendering American forces in the Philippines and British forces at Singapore, respectively. MacArthur deliberately invited the two former prisoners of war to witness the surrender, giving their presence—and their signatures here—powerful symbolic significance at the close of the Pacific War.
