Charmes-Chambertin has been recognized as an appellation since 1937. The place name “Charmes,” similar to “chaumes,” likely refers to lean, stony, and dry soils. Hubert Lignier’s Charmes-Chambertin comes from a tiny 0.10-hectare parcel planted in 1948. Located in the southern part of the climat, this parcel faces east-southeast, at an elevation of 260–275 meters, on deep soils that are predominantly clay-limestone and sandy. 2010 is often considered an exceptional vintage in the Côte de Nuits. The very harsh winter was followed by a warm spring. The wet and cool summer gave way to a miraculous September—warm and dry—that made 2010 a great vintage: small berries with thick skins, fine concentration, and high natural acidity. In the glass, pure fruit, fine structure, and velvety tannins come through. After a wet start to the year, the 2011 vintage enjoyed a mild spring, marked by early and even flowering in May. June—exceptionally hot and sunny—was offset by a more moderate summer, alternating between heat, storms, and rain. The vintage produced fresh, pure, and refined wines. 2012 began with a cold, wet spring and a few episodes of frost. The start of summer, marked by rain and hail, gave way to a sunny, dry, and very hot August. September, with its ideal weather, ensured ripening under excellent conditions: the grapes were highly concentrated, with optimal phenolic ripeness, fine acidity, and soft tannins. The 2012 wines from the Côte de Nuits are deep, very ripe, and balanced. 2015 was a sun-drenched vintage. After a mild and wet winter, the warm and bright spring encouraged rapid and early flowering. Heat and drought set in starting in June, tempered by water reserves and summer rains, which reignited the ripening process through September. 2015 is the epitome of a balanced vintage that combines fruit, body, ripe tannins, and fine acidity. Its aging potential is remarkable. The 2016 vintage, following a wet and exceptionally mild winter, experienced a cold and rainy spring and was marked by a severe frost at the end of April. The heat and sunshine of June and July allowed the vines to catch up and reach optimal ripeness through the harvest, which began on September 28 at the estate. The 2016 Pinot Noirs are precise and fresh, with silky tannins. In 2017, the season began with a very cold winter followed by a warm, dry spring. In April, bouts of frost spared the Côte de Nuits to a relatively large extent. From June through August, warm spells alternated with milder ones; sporadic rains encouraged gradual, even ripening. The harvest begins on September 7 at the estate. This winemaker’s vintage offers mouthwatering, fragrant, and supple wines.
