Domaine Hubert Lignier, Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru, 1978 (1 x 750 ml) Region: Burgundy Fill Level: excellent Capsule: ok Cork: ok Label: excellent appearance Packaging: original wooden case Notes: As early as the 11th century, the monks of Cluny contributed to the development and renown of the grands crus of Gevrey-Chambertin, whose historic heart is the climat of Chambertin. Charmes-Chambertin has been recognized as an appellation since 1937. The place name “Charmes,” similar to “chaumes,” likely refers to lean, stony, and dry soils. Hubert Lignier’s Charmes-Chambertin comes from a tiny 0.10-hectare parcel planted in 1948. Located in the southern part of the climat, this parcel faces east-southeast, at an elevation of 260–275 meters, on deep soils that are predominantly clay-limestone and sandy. 1978 is one of those “miracle vintages,” often considered one of the best of the 20th century in Burgundy. After a harsh winter and a rainy spring, damp and cool conditions persisted until the end of July. The vintage was saved by a turn of fortune and ideal weather toward the end of the season: from August through October, heat, sunshine, and northerly winds kept the vines healthy. The harvest, which was very late, began in early October. A great vintage for aging, 1978 is distinguished by classic, balanced wines, endowed with a remarkable tannic structure and fine acidity. Domaine Hubert Lignier will be pleased to welcome the winning bidder for a private tour of the estate, for two guests. The date of the visit will be mutually agreed upon by the buyer and Domaine Hubert Lignier. The estate will be delighted to welcome the bidder through December 31, 2027.
