Paradoxically, however, it is not a clos. This Grand Cru traditionally produces powerful, textured wines with a very pronounced minerality. The Clos de la Roche from Domaine Hubert Lignier, sourced from two parcels in Monts Luisants and Frémières, is distinguished by its density and complexity. 1982 was characterized by a mild winter and a warm, dry spring that encouraged rapid and abundant flowering. The summer—dry, sunny, and very hot—was marked by rainfall in August that further increased an already high yield potential. The 1982 wines are ripe, structured, and generous. 1986 offered excellent ripening conditions, with a warm, dry May that encouraged fine flowering, followed by a hot and sunny summer conducive to good sugar concentration. The cool weather in late August, followed by a warm, dry end to the season, allowed the harvest to take place under excellent conditions. The wines of this vintage are fresh, supple, and elegant. 1989 provided ideal conditions for Pinot Noir. After a mild winter and despite a few episodes of frost in April, a temperate spring allowed for a long, even flowering in late May and early June. In the midst of a hot, dry summer, a little rain nourished the vines and stimulated the ripening of the berries. An exceptional vintage if ever there was one, 1989 is distinguished by concentrated wines built for long aging.
