ANTONIO DE SIMONE (ITALIAN, 1851-C.1907) The Yacht Club de France's steam yacht 'Nirvana' in an offshore swell Signed and dated 'De Simone 1906' (lower right) and inscribed 'Y.C.F. NIRVANA' (lower left) Gouache 17 x 24½in. (43 x 62cm.) Launched by Henderson's of Meadowside for the Countess de Bearn in 1904, this 890-ton yacht was sold to the Austro-Hungarian Navy in 1909. Surviving the War, she was used by Benito Mussolini between 1928 and 1938 as his private yacht, but was then converted to a gunboat and added to the Italian Navy as the Aurora. She was torpedoed off Ancona on 11th September 1943 by the German Schnellboote S-54 and S-61, with the loss of 26 (of 88) crew. Mount has gone off, otherwise in good condition commensurate with age.
