French rug from Maison Leleu (Paule Leleu: 1906–1987) Hand-knotted rug, high-pile wool on a cotton backing. Bottle-green field featuring a striking central geometric motif of three large rings or U-shaped forms. Interlaced elements create a fluid vertical geometric pattern resembling a chain or a stylized figure-eight. The rings are softened and adorned with a rich garland of vine leaves and stylized flowers. Isolated floral motifs (rosettes) and small dotted geometric diamonds adorn the central field. The rug is framed by a narrow border, braided with a white rope or interlaced motif, punctuated by small, regular burgundy diamonds at the four corners. Circa 1940–50. L_247 cm W_160 cm Good overall condition. Paule Leleu took over management of the family business’s workshop in 1936.
