F. REHBERG (1758-1835), Anton Pfaundler von Sternfeld, 1822, Lithograph Friedrich Rehberg (1758 Hanover - 1835 Munich): Artist Anton Pfaundler von Sternfeld, 1822, Lithography Technique: Lithography over tinted stone on Paper Inscription: Signed and dated in the lower left corner of the stone: "Fr. Innsbruck 1818. lith. monaco 1822", inscribed below with the sitter's name and life data: "Anton Pfaundler von Sternfeld | b: 27 August 1757 † 15 April 1822. | Dedicated to the memory of his friend by Fr: Rehberg." Date: 1822 Description: The history painter and portraitist Friedrich Rehberg is famous for his drawings of Lady Hamilton's attitudes, which were widely distributed as prints. The Mengs pupil spent his most productive years in Italy, where he contributed to the classicist art discourse not only with works inspired by David and received in Berlin, but also through critiques published in Germany. Around 1816 he returned to Berlin and Munich and turned to lithography. The present sheet, made in commemoration of the death of his friend Anton Pfaundler von Sternfeld, shows the deceased in three-quarter profile with a pensive look. During his studies, August Anton Pfaundler von Sternfeld (1757 Reute - 1822 Innsbruck) was particularly interested in mathematical and anatomical sciences, but he was also always interested in the artistic aspects of these subjects. Around 1777, however, his preoccupation with art was to be restricted by his father's instructions, who envisaged a career in the civil service for his son. Drawing, painting and the production of printed works were now to become a secondary occupation of Anton's, which he pursued throughout his life. With the present sheet, the German painter Friedrich Rehberg pays tribute to his artist colleague and close friend Pfaundler von Sternfeld with a last portrait, which was drawn after life but only reproduced lithographically after the death of the sitter. Keywords: Artist, Portrait, Fashion, 19th century, Romanticism, Portraits, Germany, Size: Paper: 32,3 cm x 21,2 cm (12,7 x 8,3 in), Depiction: 24,1 cm x 19,1 cm (9,5 x 7,5 in) Condition: Very good condition. Slightly foxed. In the illustrations there are isolated damages of the paper surface as well as irregularities in the tone plate. There is a dark spot at the lower margin.
